Wow I have just realised I have been in China now for 4 weeks and this is only the second post. So yeah since leaving the lofty Gansu I have headed to Sichuan the home of very spicy food. Very good food but painful the next day if you know what I mean. In Chengdu they have what they call a hotpot and it is hot really hot. It sits in the middle of the table bubbling and steaming away and is filled with oil and stock that is packed with chills and sichuan pepper corns. You then order small portions of things that you drop in the pot cooking it to your liking then fish it out and prepare to burn your lips off. I went for the local eel and inadvertently ordered pigs aorta. It was vey tough and crunchy incase your wondering.
When I wasn’t burning my face off with Chengdu hotpot I managed to set off and see some giant panda’s. They must be the laziest creatures on the planet I spent a good 5 hours at the panda research base and for most of my time there they were bloody sleeping. They were cute though, I just think its mad that they were once vicious meat eaters and due to whatever happened all those years ago they had to eat bamboo to survive and now still do. No matter how cute they were I was not going to get close to these buggers I remember watching a youtube video where this stupid woman stands right in front of a pandas cage with her back to it and the panda grabs her by the coat and tries pull her into the enclosure. She nearly got ripped in half!
It would seem I have some sort of pull towards getting high, and not in the way you are all thinking! I’m talking altitude. Form Chengdu I headed to Emei Shan one of four holy mountains where the summit is 3100 meters. At the summit you can see the sunrise from above the clouds and check out an ancient inaccessible temple on the neighbouring mountain. To make this journey upto the 3100 summit and come back down again I trekked 75km. As I approached the summit I made my way through a part where the freezing temperatures caused the clouds to freeze on the leaves of the trees it was like an ice forest. In the photographs you will see the steps that I had to climb and how fucking steep it is! Coming down was even worse by the time I reached the bottom 3 days after I started the assent my legs had turned to jelly! They still aren’t right now.
I was a little disappointed after staying the night at the summit as in the morning the clouds were so high and dense it was impossible to see any sunrise you could just about see 10 meters in front of you. The assent was interesting though I got attacked by some monkeys as i stupidly did not take a stick with me and I got to see a cat catch a mouse then bite its head off, it then expertly liked the stomach and guts out of it then swallowed the thing whole! It had clearly done this before.
